Most women diagnosed in the early stages of breast cancer are likely to have a great prognosis. It is also likely that they remain disease free for several years after their treatment ends.
However, the side effects of such treatments associated with bone issues are also likely to have effect the patient's bone health in the long run. The bone loss associated with breast cancer therapy like endocrine therapy may contribute towards the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures in the long run.
Several guidelines for treatment are now changed to include the need for preserving bone health in adjuvant therapy regimes and any measures involved.
Premature menopause induced by chemotherapy can also increase the rate of bone loss and reduction in bone mass density. This may result in increased long-term
risks of osteoporosis and fracture.
Zoledronic / reclast acid cost information
Zoledronic Acid infusion alters bone formation and breakdown in the body to slow down the rate of bone loss and possibly prevent bone fractures.
Bisphosphonates have been used for the treatment of osteoporosis and bone metastases in patients diagnosed with advanced stage cancers. In respect to treating such diseases in breast cancer cases, an intravenous bisphosphonate known as zoledronic acid is believed to play an important role.
Generic: Zoledronic Acid
Brand: Reclast, Zometa, Aclasta
How does Reclast infusion work
A patient's risk of fractures is directly associated with bone mass density and clinical risk factors. As such, prevention of bone loss during treatment is proven to be beneficial for reduction of long-term fracture risk.
In case of post-menopausal women suffering from osteoporosis, bisphosphonates such as reclast medication have generally been used for the prevention and reversal of age-related bone loss.
In a recent clinical trial involving post-menopausal women with early hormone responsive breast cancer who were being treated adjuvant endocrine therapy. One group was to only receive the endocrine therapy while the second group would also receive Zoledronic Acid infusion.
Patients who only received endocrine therapy had below baseline levels bone mass density. While the patients who also received Zoledronic Acid injection had improved levels of bone mass density.
Therefore, the use of bisphosphonates as an adjuvant therapy for all post-menopausal women with early breast cancer should be considered.
Treatment with adjuvant bisphosphonates like Zoledronic Acid can modestly cause the reduction of the risk of outcomes related to breast cancer.
